Interviewing and Promoting Your Work on Podcasts

Podcasting is a great platform for authors to promote their work on, but the whole process can be very daunting. So here’s a quick guide to how you can connect with potential readers, share your expertise, and generate buzz around your book using podcasts

Identifying the Right Podcasts

The first step is to pick the right podcasts for your audience’s interests and demographics. Look for hosts who are passionate about your book’s genre (or subject if you are a non-fiction writer), and check if it’s worth your time by studying their listener numbers, social media following and engagement.

Preparing for the Interview

By now you should know your book inside out, but be prepared to discuss things like your book’s key themes, unique selling points, and the inspiration behind it. Prepare a concise and compelling pitch about yourself, and your book.

Take a listen to previous episodes so that you can anticipate the questions you’ll be asked – or reach out to the host and ask for a list up front so you can prepare some thoughtful answers.

Finally tip is to be your authentic self. Don’t pretend to be someone you’re not – people want to hear from the real you!

Making the Most of the Interview

During your podcast interview you need to stay focused! Actively listen to the host’s questions and respond thoughtfully with clear, concise answers. Use your storytelling abilities to engage the listener and bring your book to life.

Remember to include a clear call to action and a way to engage with you and don’t forget to say thank you! Tell your host how grateful you are for the opportunity to be on the show.

Promoting Your Podcast Appearance

It takes time to research, prepare and record a podcast, so make the most of the work you’ve put in by promoting the episode everywhere you can. Post about the interview on your social media channels, remembering to tag the podcast and host if you can. If you have a blog, write a post about the interview and link to that episode.

You can use your email list to provide your subscribers with exclusive content related to the podcast interview, such as a behind-the-scenes look or a special offer. And don’t forget about the listeners – the people you are trying to reach. Respond to their questions and comments and make sure they get something special for joining your community.
